The Piccolo Mediterranean Herbs seed collection will take any young or mature gardener on a tour of the aromas and flavours of the Med without leaving their garden. They offer a lovely way for children to grow, cook and taste herbs that will excite and inspire them!

The collection contains three seed packets:

  • Red Rubin Basil (Ocimum basilicum) - a variety red-coloured basil with a very intense flavour. The reddish-purple leaves and stems that are very attractive in salads and are perfect for making an unusual pesto! The packet contains around 120 seeds and can be sown indoors from February and outdoors from April.
  • Thyme de Provence (Thymus vulgaris) - also known as Summer Thyme, it is a  perennial herb that is well known for its culinary, medicinal and ornamental uses. It has small pinkish flowers loved by bees and butteflies. Its tiny, soft, grey-green leaves are the leading component in the famous herbs de Provence dried herb mix, in bouquet garni (a bundle of string-tied herbs used to flavour soups and stews) as well as being used in the classic za'atar spice blend. Thyme has also been known as a key ingredient in folk medicine and is listed frequently in spell handbooks! Packet contains around 350 seeds and can be sown indoors from February and outdoors from April.
  • Greek Oregano (Origanum vulgare) - a perennial subspecies of common oregano with a much stronger fragrance and flavour. In summer it is adorned with beautiful white flowers loved by pollinators. Thyme is said to have been invented by the Grecian goddess of love, Aphrodite herself! Well known for its use on pizza (dried herb), fresh oregano is great in tomato salads and to flavour savoury biscuits and tomato sauces. The packet contains around 800 seeds and can be sown indoors from February and outdoors from April.

The seeds are of certified standard, non-GMO and non-hybrid. The latter is particularly important to us as we believe that it is good for children to witness the whole seed-to-seed cycle and learn to grow from seeds that they have picked from the plants they originally grew (when possible!).

The packaging of the seeds is also very eco-conscious with heat-sealed paper envelopes and contains a description of the plant and how to grow it best.

Please note that these seeds have been designed for adults and children alike and so not all the 'advice/suggestions for use' on the packaging is relevant for children.
