Tomatoes are often one of the first vegetable (strictly speaking it is actually a fruit!) that children decide to grow from seed as they are fairly easy to grow and they come in easy compact varieties that can even grow in hanging baskets. Tomatoes are delicious eaten straight from the plant on a hot summer day. However, most plants produce too many fruits to just be eaten raw and making a nice tomato sauce is a good way for children to lean about how to turn the produce they have grown into yummy dishes.

This Piccolo Tomato Sauce seed collection comprises three seed packets:

  • San Marzano Nano Tomato - known for their firm thick flesh and sweet taste, San Marzano tomatoes are considered the best for making traditional tomato sauces to be used on pizza or in pasta dishes. The 'nano' version of San Marzano produce small sweet plum-shaped tomatoes that work well both in sauces and just eaten directly off the plant. They are perfect for some impromptu kids gardening grazing and if any are left they can be quickly be turned into a lovely pasta sauce.
  • Cayenne Long Slim Hot Pepper - the addition of chili is a great way to make the tomato sauce a little punchier and this variety can be eaten when still green and slighly milder, or left on the plant until they start to dry out for more heat.
  • Italiano Classico (Genovese) Basil - the Genovese variety of basil has round and dark green leaves that are less shiny than common basil. The flavour is also more concentrated and less sweet. No traditional Italian tomato sauce is complete without some lovely basil in it and if you have any spare, the leaves and stalks can be used to make authentic pesto or to spice up other dishes as well as drinks.

The seeds are of certified standard, non-GMO and non-hybrid. The latter is particularly important to us as we believe that it is good for children to witness the whole seed-to-seed cycle and learn to grow from seeds that they have picked from the plants they originally grew (when possible!).

The packaging of the seeds is also very eco-conscious with heat-sealed paper envelopes and contains a description of the plant and how to grow it best.

Please note that these seeds have been designed for adults and children alike and so not all the 'advice/suggestions for use' on the packaging is relevant for children.
